Why do we use deodorants?
In areas such as under the arms, sweat cannot easily evaporate creating an environment that draws a higher number of odor-causing bacteria. Deodorants help diminish body odor by deactivating the functions of odor-causing bacteria.
So what’s the difference between an anti-perspirant and a deodorant? Anti-perspirants contain fragrance as well as chemical compounds that block the pores to stop the discharge of perspiration. No sweat, no odor. The active ingredients that are most often used in anti-perspirants are aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, and aluminum-zirconium compounds. Deodorants allow the release of perspiration, but prevent odor by combating it with antiseptic agents, which kill odor-causing bacteria, e.g. potassium alum. There is a great deal of debate out there as to whether deodorants are more effective than anti-perspirants. Our belief is that deoderant is safer and more natural, as by using a product to stop your natural bodily functions, such as sweating, we are changing the natural function of the body which just doesn’t make sense to us.
Why consider a natural deodorant?
Our deodorant is 100% all-natural and chemical free. It doesn’t contain any questionable or potentially harmful chemicals that are commonly found in commercial deodorants and anti-perspirants.
Does our deodorant contain aluminum?
The simple answer is yes. The active ingredient in our deodorants is Potassium Alum, which is a naturally occurring mineral and is the main ingredient in liquid crystal or rock crystal deodorants. The concentration of potassium alum in RMSC deodorants is 4% which is significantly less than the 100% concentration found in the deodorant crystals and also far less then the aluminum compounds found in many commercial deodorant and anti-perspirants. (These are typically around 8 – 25%.) We use a powdered form of potassium alum that is then combined with water and a small number of other natural ingredients to produce fantastic liquid deodorants. Potassium alum is anti-microbial which means that it inhibits the growth of bacteria responsible for body odor. This is why our deodorant really works. Our deodorants are roll on and mess and fuss free. They have an easy, consistent application, are free of chemicals and don’t clog your pores. We hope you love our deodorant as much as we do. For those who prefer a fresh outdoor and earthy aroma, Forest Fresh is perfect! Cypress has been used for centuries to combat excessive perspiration as it has deodorizing properties. Cedarwood is known to relieve itching and along with amyris and patchouli is astringent and antiseptic.
